Spoiled Or Mislead The Affluenza Defense - 1626 Words
Spoiled or Mislead? The Affluenza Defense In January of 2015, student athlete Brock Turner sexually assaulted an intoxicated, unconscious woman. In June of 2016, Turner was sentenced to a mere six months in prison. The reasoning of such a short sentence being it would have a ââ¬Å"severe impact on him, [and his father argued that] a kidââ¬â¢s life shouldnââ¬â¢t be ruinedâ⬠¦because of 20 minutes of actionâ⬠(Dockterman 2). This argument is one that is often brought up in recent culture. Teens or young adults who are convicted of crimes such as sexual assault, driving under intoxication, or other similar types of crimes are often let off the hook. This defense used is known as ââ¬Å"Affluenzaâ⬠, or, as defined by Matt Gutman of ABC News, the idea of being ââ¬Å"too spoiled by [oneââ¬â¢s] parents to know right from wrongâ⬠(Gutman 2). The ââ¬Å"Affluenzaâ⬠defense is a greatly debated one. Those who argue in favor of the affluenza defense often make arguments along the lines of a spoiled lif e causing a child to not see consequences of their actions. Along these lines, they argue that if the children donââ¬â¢t see what their outcome may be, and they carry out negative, harmful, illegal action, their life shouldnââ¬â¢t be ruined based off of the one bad decision. Those who believe in affluenza think that these young people can be steered straight, and these moments can be used as teaching experiences. However, others do not agree in the validity of the Affluenza defense. Those with this perspective also make the argument

Liberal Ideas Of Equality And The Right Of Law - 1591 Words
Liberal ideas of equality and the right of law may be normative to this current epoch but these ideas were considered radical at their time (Fielding et al. 2009, p. 127). Rising to prominence during the 18th century Enlightenment, liberal ideas has roots in the period of the protestant reformation in the 16th century, with ideas of increased importance and faith in the individual and his rationality in opposition to the central authority of the Catholic Church (Fielding et al., 2009, p. 106). Later, political liberalism was said to be a result of the growing middle class in a period where growing capitalism took the place of medieval feudalism and reflected the middle class interests against the ââ¬Å"absolutismâ⬠of monarchy. (Heywood 2007, p. 24) In summary, classical liberalism is a tradition of greater emphasis in autonomy of the individual with less authority the ruler and, at the time, further fuelled by the growing industrialisation and economic growth that came along with it (Fielding et al. 2009, p. 107). In this essay, some of the many key ideas of classical liberalism will be discussed, such as individualism and personal liberty, equality and rule of law and property and the free market principle, drawing heavily from work by John Locke. International Space Station Essay Example For Students
International Space Station Essay The International Space Station is the doorway to the future of mankind and theworld as it is known. The scientific and medical discoveries that will be madeon the station could create billions of dollars annually. A plan like this, arranged to benefit the whole world economy, should sound like a good idea toevery person, but some believe that the ISS is too risky, too ineffective, ortoo costly to create. Whether or not the space station is worth the money, time, and effort, one thing is clear, everyone is interested in this virtual floatinglaboratory and what assets or liabilities it will bring. The future ofscientific experimentation and exploration may be located, not on earth, but onthe man made island called the International Space Station. Of all the factorsthat go into building a space station, construction of the massive object is themost tedious objective. During the building of the ISS, tensions have run highseveral times when deadlines were missed or funds were not available . This spacestation is the most expansive mission the world has ever encountered. TheInternational Space Station will be a fifteen country mission. When finished, itwill boast over an acre of solar panels for heating and energy, have a volumeroughly sizable to two jumbo jets, and contain four times the electrical powerof the Russian space station, Mir. It will take approximately forty-five flightsover the next five years to assemble the one hundred pieces of the station whilecircling the orbit of the earth (Goldin 11). This floating station, the size ofa large football stadium, which is traveling at over 17,500 miles per houraround the earth, will have a minimum life expectancy of only ten years, although scientists hope for a much longer time. The station is so large that itwill sometimes be visible by the naked eye during the night (Chang 12). Manypeople agree with the idea of some sort of space laboratory, but wonder why ithas to cost so many tax dollars. Some estimates for the st ation confirm that thecost has been underestimated by billions of dollars. Late last year Boeing beatout several other competitors for the prestigious position of main contractor. NASA agreed to sign a 5.6 billion dollar contract with Boeing to build many ofthe essential parts of the space station. Russia is also placing trust in thisairplane superpower. They signed a 180 million dollar contract to build theFunctional Cargo Block, the unit that will provide power to stabilize thestation (Bizony 87). The International Space Station may provide many scientificdiscoveries, but everyone will pay for it. This project will become the mostexpensive project in space since the 1969 mission of Apollo 13 to the moon. Thetotal estimated cost will be over twenty billion dollars (8). On theInternational Space Station, there will be a large variety of experimentsranging from improvements of industry to medical advances. The largest portionof time will be devoted to scientific experimentation and discovery. The ISSwill create advances that will assist scientists to better understand themysteries of the physical, chemical, and biological world. Without gravity theymay conceive the technological discoveries that will boost all economies (Goldin11). One thing the astronauts will use in their pursuit of knowledge is remotetelescience. It is an advanced technology that allows scientists on the groundto monitor the progress of the experiments on the station. This will keep peopleon Earth up to date on the data collection that is occurring in space. .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac , .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac .postImageUrl , .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac , .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac:hover , .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac:visited , .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac:active { border:0!important; } .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac:active , .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u007134b3970351a425ee1e2f7d0f86ac:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The American Indian Genocide EssayTelescience will use interactive data and video links to make the connection asrealistic as possible (Science Facilities 7). Video Games As Art Essay Example For Students
Video Games As Art Essay Steven Spielberg spoke out on video games last month at the EA Game Innovation Lab at the University of Southern California. I think the real indicator, he said, will be when somebody confesses that they cried at Level 17. Spielberg was talking about video games and art, and the increasingly less absurd question of are-they-or-arent-they. The mere fact that U.S.C. has a Game Innovation Lab is probably an indicator that something is afoot, but Im here to accept Spielbergs challenge and come clean. A video game made me cry. The game is called Halo, and it wasnt actually Level 17; it was Level 5. I had been slugging it out for what seemed likeand probably washours with a bunch of aliens in an icy canyon. Just as all hope was fading, I seized an alien aircraft and made my escape. I sailed up into the darkening sky with light snow sifting down around me. Moody music, like something from Carmina Burana, swelled in the background. The sounds of battle faded beneath me in the dusk. It was like the end of Platoon, and I was Charlie Sheen. Then the waterworks started. We will write a custom essay on Video Games As Art specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Listen: I am a grownup, no-dorkier-than-average person. I dont consider myself susceptible to hysterics (my eyes remained miraculously dry throughout The Terminal, Mr. Spielberg). So what happened on Level 5? Right now video games are the worlds largest cult phenomenon. Those who play them (fully half of all Americans ages 6 and up) love them, and those who dont play them regard them with virulent distaste. Its time that changed. Those of you in the latter group, if you have any curiosity about the future of your own culture, and if you havent already put down this magazine in favor of Flaubert or croquet or whatever, take a look at three new video games that expand our notions of what a video game can do. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (for PlayStation2) sounds like a game that glorifies delinquency, juvenile and otherwise. And it does. But its also an extraordinary experiment in interactive storytelling. You play a playa,a Snoop-style gangbanger wandering through a vast, absurdly detailed virtual version of California. Theres no hard-and-fast narrative. You go where you wish and do what you like, and the game makes things interesting accordingly. This is something thats possible in no other medium. San Andreas combines the richness of art with the freedom of real life to create something entirely new, totally unclassifiable and really, really cool. Ive already confessed my unmanly affection for Halo, which may be the single most perfect video game ever made. Halo 2 (for Xbox) hits stores Nov. 9, and it offers more of the same adrenalized, flawlessly orchestrated, hyper-realistic combat (the new game lets you rock two weapons simultaneously, John Woostyle, which is not actually that useful but hella fun), but its real genius lies in its architecture. Its staged like Wagnerian opera: you fight through vast, Olympian structures, combating mind-hurtingly titanic forces, and the effect is precisely that mixture of awe and terror and wonder that the philosopher Edmund Burke called the sublime. The original Half-Life borrowed technology from hard-core shoot-em-ups and used it to spin an absorbing tale about a scientist on the run from scary-gross interdimensional aliens. This had never been done before. Half-Life 2 (PC), which arrives Nov. 16, after six years of work, is one of the most frighteningly atmospheric games Ive ever seen. Humanity came out of its interdimensional scrap holding the silver medal, and now we live in an alien-run police state enforced by collaborationist thugs and towering three-legged monstrosities. Long, ringing silences, too bright sunlight and empty streets deepen the sense of Orwellian despair. .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95 , .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95 .postImageUrl , .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95 , .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95:hover , .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95:visited , .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95:active { border:0!important; } .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95:active , .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95 .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u40e7b71ad8ec7d1885e59ba62d966c95:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Lets All Stay In School EssayArt is generally supposed to mean something, although its not always easy to say what. Last year game sales hit $7 billion, in the same exclusive ballpark as movies (about $9 billion). We should count ourselves lucky. The video game is a brand-new medium, and we get to see it evolve from the very beginning. Are video games art? Nobody knows yet, but the cool thing is, were the ones who get to decide. Health care systems
Health care systems The three main health care systems are socialist, capitalist and communist system. Decisions on which of the three systems to follow mostly depends on the kind of governance in the land. Arguably, the socialist health system is the best of the three health system. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Health care systems specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This is because it ensures all the people in the republic get cheap or even free health care. Health is one of the basic necessities of a human being and therefore it would be such that majority of the people in the society are able to access it. According to the principles of World Health Organization, everyone should be able to access good quality health care. This will be well taken care of in scenario of a socialist health system because it is a government policy to have everyone incorporated in this system. Considering that there is a big number of people who cannot afford expensive health care, socialist health system offer a good alternative system of health submission. This means even the poor in the society have their health issues well taken care of. The socialist system is also non-discriminatory in nature, in that even the minority in the society as well as women and children will enjoy available and accessible health care. Economic accessibility is one factor of the socialist system that makes it more suitable than the other systems of health care (Bowling and Ebrahim 17). The government may introduce a flat rate that is affordable to the people in the society this means that all the people are well taken care and medicine is cheaper to them. The fact that due to the low cost of health system in the society few people will be willing to invest in the health sector is an added benefit because people who may just invest in the health sector just to gain profits without the desire to put peopleââ¬â¢s heath demands first will be minim ized. Ownership of factors of production is controlled by the government in a socialist set up, which means that the government controls the production of the medicine. The centralization of the system ensures that quality and amount is well controlled, which may not be the case in other systems, for example, the capitalist where profits gain is the main driving force. Issues of corruption are also cut out in socialist system because every citizen has a say on to what he/she expects of the system and the system is not controlled by a selected few. Finally, this system can be of benefit to get statistics about the general population that may be beneficial to their planning, for example, a Maternity and Child Welfare Law adopted in Japan helps the government know the number of birth of children, since every pregnancy has to be registered. This system therefore provides the administration with useful information for the purpose of shaping health and child care policy (Spender and Cheris 964). Many countries have adopted this system and modified it to meet their countries mode of operation. This has led to reforms in these countries, like the introduction of compulsory health insurance legislation in Russian in 1991. The American affordable health care Act signed into law in 2009 has its bases on the principle of the socialist system that gives every citizen a chance to get quality health care at affordable costs. However, this health care system has its limitations. Paying of high taxes by the public is one of the main disadvantages as this system calls for the administration to spend so much to support it. There is also problem of distribution of resources, and if not well controlled, this system may be a pro blem since some areas may have an under production, while others face overproduction.
